The title fight between John Size and Frankie Lor Fu-chuen has been the gift that keeps on giving this season and however it ends, some form of history will be made.

Never before has a trainer landed more than 75 winners in a season and not won the premiership, something that will soon change.

A double at Sha Tin last Sunday took Lor to 83 winners for the campaign and gave him the upper hand on his former boss Size, who has 78 victories through 79 meetings.

With nine fixtures remaining, it’s not impossible to think both trainers could tick over 90 winners.

Considering Size holds the record for the most winners in a season at 94, they’re massive numbers even when taking into account the fact the amount of races is gradually increasing each campaign.

Should Lor maintain his advantage, he’ll take home his first trainers’ title in his fifth season as a handler.

He has already landed 18 winners more than his previous personal best of 65 – a mark he has landed on in three of his four completed seasons.

A Size success would see him snare his 12th title and break the deadlock with George Moore for the most premierships in Hong Kong racing history.

After four consecutive crowns between 2015-16 and 2018-19, Size has been forced to wait for his historic 12th gong, with Ricky Yiu Poon-fai and then Caspar Fownes tasting success in the past two seasons.

If Size is to lift the trophy, the next few meetings shape as crucial – he cant afford to be staring at a deficit of six or seven wins with the same amount of meetings remaining.

While Lor saddles up 11 runners at Sha Tin on Sunday and of course has some chances, Size looks to be throwing the kitchen sink at proceedings in acknowledgement of the need to peg back a deficit that has grown from one to five in the space of two meetings.

The 67-year-old saddles up hot chances Beauty Tycoon, Tuchel, Brilliant Way and Erimo, while he goes in heavy handed to the Class Three Amethyst Handicap (1,600m) – saddling up Tempest Express, Hit The Shot and Leading Fortune – and the two features on the card.

In the Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m), Size sends around Champion’s Way and Excellent Proposal, while Lucky Express, Silver Express and Blaze Warrior make up the veteran’s hand in the Group Three Premier Cup (1,400m).

Lucky Express has a victory over course and distance to his name, while Silver Express and Blaze Warrior enter the contest carrying the minimum weight of 113 pounds and look capable of producing strong performances from good draws.
