Recap by phillip woo

Mega Castle travelled sweetly in fifth and on the rails, shuffled back to behind midfield and two deep with pace injected passing the 600m, shifted five wide at the 300m and ran on well to take control 100m out for an overdue win. Lucky Army rounded the final bend six wide and kept on well to wear down Gorgeous Ruler in the final bound for second. Gorgeous Ruler rounded the final bend five wide and stayed on well to just miss second. East Ocean was running on empty 100m out. Daily Double was getting going late without threatening. Macassar made his run at the rear about eight off the leaders, had three runners beaten while swinging in widest out and ran on passed tired rivals. Flying Keeper straightened with one wider out and kept on one-paced under a sharp left whip. Specked late, Gorgeous Life was posted four deep early on from gate 12, before sitting outside Golden Boy one off at the 1,100m, was under the pump entering the straight and was gone at the 250m. Golden Boy pressed forward from a wide gate to assume the lead at the 1,200m, continued to set a muddling pace before handing up to Mustang at the 800m, stayed to the fence upon straightening and was struggling over the final 200m. Sonofthewest was back to near midfield rounding the final bend and found nothing under pressure three deep in the straight run.

Racing Incident Report

Race Two: (260) - VILLAGE HANDICAP - Class 5 - 1650 Meters FLYING KEEPER, LUCKY ARMY and MACASSAR were slow to begin.

Shortly after the start, GOLDEN BOY shifted out, resulting in MUSTANG being taken out onto GORGEOUS LIFE, causing both those horses to become unbalanced.

After this, MUSTANG was taken across behind runners.

Passing the winning post on the first occasion, MACASSAR raced tight between FLYING KEEPER and MUSTANG.

Then near the 1300 Metres, MACASSAR was steadied when crowded for room between MUSTANG and FLYING KEEPER which got its head on the side and shifted out.

Passing the 1300 Metres and again approaching the 1000 Metres, LUCKY ARMY got its head up on a number of occasions when being steadied away from the heels of GORGEOUS RULER.

After the 1100 Metres, MUSTANG was left racing wide and without cover and after the 900 Metres was allowed to improve its position to obtain a position closer to the fence.

After the 1000 Metres, ICE FIRE shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of DAILY DOUBLE.

When ICE FIRE shifted out, FLYING KEEPER was steadied away from the heels of EAST OCEAN.

After the 600 Metres, DAILY DOUBLE became unbalanced and lost ground after getting its head on the side and shifting out towards the heels of LUCKY ARMY.

Approaching the 400 Metres, SONOFTHEWEST was checked away from the heels of GOLDEN BOY which was steadied after attempting to improve between MUSTANG and GORGEOUS LIFE where there was insufficient room.

Rounding the Home Turn, MACASSAR was awkwardly placed close to the heels of FLYING KEEPER which got its head on the side and hung out.

After initially laying out in the Straight, MACASSAR shifted in when struck with the whip near the 50 Metres.

For this reason, D Whyte stopped riding MACASSAR and straightened his mount.

When questioned, K C Leung stated that he had been instructed to lead on GOLDEN BOY if possible, however, if other runners showed superior speed, he should allow those horses to go forward and take a position behind the speed.

He said after the 800 Metres when leading the race on GOLDEN BOY, he observed MUSTANG improving its position quickly to his outside.

He said at this time he did not ride GOLDEN BOY along to maintain the lead, rather he allowed the horse to maintain its position to the inside of MUSTANG if possible.

He said however that GOLDEN BOY did not quicken at this time and MUSTANG was able to improve its position around GOLDEN BOY into the lead.

K C Leung was advised that he had erred in not making a far greater effort to maintain the lead on GOLDEN BOY at this time of the race, particularly given the tempo of the race at that time.

He was also advised that, in the opinion of the Stewards, his riding of GOLDEN BOY at this time of the race had lacked judgement and in similar circumstances he would be expected to make every effort to maintain more advantageous positions.

A veterinary inspection of GOLDEN BOY after the race did not show any significant findings other than the horse had sustained an abrasion wound to the left hind fetlock.

MEGA CASTLE and LUCKY ARMY were sent for sampling.
