Recap by phillip woo

Early favourite Great Renown settled nicely behind midfield and two deep, rounded the final bend with two wider out and ran on strongly, despite laying in, to hit the lead 100m out and staved off Always Something for a third win from five starts for trainer Richard Gibson this season. Always Something flashed home late to make it interesting inside the final 100m. My Mate Adric was out in line contesting for the lead three deep from a wide gate, before sitting just outside the leader Flora Danica in second at the 1,200m, worked to the lead three deep at the 200m and could not fend off the top pair. Kick Serve stayed on all right to round out the First-4. Fluke made his run in fourth along the rails, straightened two deep and kept on one-paced. Upgrading made some ground late without threatening, though was crowded between Super Brand and Jun Hua at the 200m. Flora Danica pressed forward from a wide gate to dictate the running, straightened a length on top and was coming back to the field over the final 200m. Jun Hua was never on the course near the speed, was under pressure entering the straight and only held his ground six wide in the straight run. . Late-fancied favourite, Plentiful made his run third from the rear and two deep, hit the straight with one wider out and never did let down as expected after two smart placings over the 1,400m at Sha Tin. He's better at the home track.

Racing Incident Report

Race Four: (309) - CLEVELAND HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1650 Meters AMAZING BREEDERS was slow to begin.

From the outside barrier, ALWAYS SOMETHING was taken across behind runners shortly after the start.

Passing the winning post on the first occasion, FLUKE and SUPER BRAND raced tight inside PEGASUS SUPREME which got its head on the side and shifted in.

Making the turn after the 600 Metres, UPGRADING was momentarily tightened for room inside GREAT RENOWN.

Approaching the 200 Metres, SUPER BRAND was checked and UPGRADING was crowded for room between JUN HUA (C W Wong) which shifted in and KICK SERVE which shifted out slightly.

C W Wong was severely reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances he must make every endeavour to prevent his mounts from shifting ground.

Passing the 200 Metres, PEGASUS SUPREME was steadied away from the heels of JUN HUA.

In the Straight, GREAT RENOWN hung in.

ALWAYS SOMETHING also lay in in the Straight.

Throughout the race, JUN HUA travelled wide and without cover.

G Mossm (GREAT RENOWN) was fined a sum of $2,000 for using the whip in the forehand manner down the horses shoulder on a number of occasions in the Straight.

G Mossm had previously been spoken to regarding this matter.

Apprentice C Y Ho pleaded guilty to a breach of Rule 100(2) in that he failed to ride UPGRADING, 6th placegetter, out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

For this breach of the Rule, Apprentice Ho was fined a sum of $15,000.

In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account C Y Hos status as an apprentice jockey.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of PLENTIFUL which was racing at Happy Valley for only the second occasion tonight, Z Purton stated that the horse, which was wearing blinkers for the first time, became stirred up behind the barriers.

He said passing the winning post on the first occasion PLENTIFUL became unbalanced after jumping a shadow on the track.

He said after this PLENTIFUL did not relax and did not travel as comfortably as he had hoped.

He added that he shifted PLENTIFUL out rounding the Home Turn and after being momentarily unable to obtain clear running near the 300 Metres PLENTIFUL then did not finish off its race.

A veterinary inspection of PLENTIFUL after the race did not show any significant findings.
