Recap by phillip woo

Early favourite Meridian Treasure was ridden forward to sit outside the muddling pace of Spicy Shrimp in second at the 800m, eventually weathered a battle on both sides after hitting the front 350m out to score a game success at his second start. Firming second-pick, Chancellor settled a handy fourth and one off the fence, and kept plugging away to make it close at the finish. Late-fancied favourite Enjoy The Fun settled midfield and one-to-two off the fence in a tightly-bunched field, swung the final bend six wide and kept on one-paced over the last 100m, despite looming as a winning chance at the 150m. Was headed at the 300m and kept whacking away to hold fourth. Newcomer Peri Peri Saffron settled at the rear after breaking slowly, but was doing his best work late to finish an encouraging fifth in his debut and will be winning races with more experience. Specked late, Winner Smart settled on the rails in midfield, straightened one off the rails and stayed on OK without threatening. Top-rated Speechmaker settled four deep and third from the rear from the widest gate, cornered in with two wider out and made some progress early straight, before coming up empty over the last 150m off. He appears to need weight relief.

Racing Incident Report

Race One: (425) - 200 YEARS CITI HANDICAP (Sec 1) - Class 4 - 1200 Meters BRILLIANT WORLD was withdrawn on 23.2.12 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (substantial amount of mucopus in trachea on scoping after track work) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter HONOUR LIST.

HOW SPEEDY was withdrawn on 25.2.12 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (fever).

Before being allowed to race again, BRILLIANT WORLD and HOW SPEEDY will both be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

TRIUMPHANT WAY began awkwardly and lost ground at the start.

ENJOY THE FUN shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of CHANCELLOR on jumping, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced.

PERI PERI SAFFRON was slow to begin.

From the outside barrier, SPEECHMAKER was taken across behind runners shortly after the start.

Making the first turn, CHANCELLOR was steadied away from the heels of SPICY SHRIMP.

ENJOY THE FUN, which was following CHANCELLOR, commenced to over-race and shifted out away from the heels of that horse and in doing so made contact with TRIUMPHANT WAY.

SUGAR PEGASUS and QUANTUM EXPRESS, which were following ENJOY THE FUN, were hampered in consequence.

M Du Plessis (HONOUR LIST) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 1000 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of WINNER SMART, causing that horse to be checked and lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled.

M Du Plessis was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday, 15 March 2012 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays).

The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting on Wednesday, 7 March 2012.

LONGWAH KID, which was following, was steadied away from the heels of WINNER SMART in consequence.

After this, WINNER SMART continued to be awkwardly placed close to the heels of HONOUR LIST.

Near the 650 Metres, ENJOY THE FUN shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of CHANCELLOR.

At the 600 Metres, QUANTUM EXPRESS was steadied away from the heels of ENJOY THE FUN.

After the 400 Metres, PERI PERI SAFFRON was shifted to the inside of WINNER SMART when disappointed for running between that horse and LONGWAH KID.

Passing the 300 Metres, LONGWAH KID and WINNER SMART were crowded for room between HONOUR LIST and SHOWOFSUCCESS which shifted ground when hanging in.

Throughout the race, SHOWOFSUCCESS travelled wide and without cover.

After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that SPICY SHRIMP had lost its right hind plate.

ENJOY THE FUN, MERIDIAN TREASURE and CHANCELLOR were sent for sampling.
