Recap by phillip woo

Smacked late to start favourite, Gold Edition mustered quickly to lead from gate three, went a steady clip while corning nearly two lengths on top and kept on strongly to chalk up a second sprint win from six starts, despite a rise in grade. Well-punted late, Loads Of Joy travelled a prominent fourth along the fence, straightened two deep and kept on gamely to just hold Hawthorne by a bob of heads for second. Hawthorne was caught deep early on from gate 12, before finding covering one off in fifth at the 700m, rounded the final bend with two wider out and stayed on nicely to make it interesting for second. Early favourite, Merry Anniversary hopped up in the air at the break before settling slightly worse than midfield in the run and one off the fence, shifted into the clear with one wider out at 250m and finished up reasonably well to finish a distant fourth. Pocket Rockets swung the final bend widest out and was getting going late without menacing. Specked late, Rainbow Fighter covered ground fourth from the rear, rounded the final bend with two wider out and only kept on passed beaten runners. Flashing Guy was ridden along to hold a position worse than midfield and on the fence, failed to respond three upon straightening and kept on evenly over the final 200m. Amedeo was struggling 150m out in a disappointing performance. Jun Dao rounded the final bend five wide and was never a factor.

Racing Incident Report

Race Five: (605) - LE FRENCH MAY TROPHY (HANDICAP) - Class 3 - 1000 Meters From wide barriers, SILVER OSMANTHUS and POCKET ROCKETS were taken across behind runners shortly after the start.

Approaching the 800 Metres, LUCKY RED raced in restricted room between AMEDEO and GOLD EDITION which shifted out.

Near the 600 Metres, SILVER OSMANTHUS became unbalanced and lost ground when momentarily crowded for room inside JUN DAO which was taken in by RAINBOW FIGHTER.

Near the 100 Metres, FLASHING GUY got its head on the side and shifted in towards the heels of PO CHING KING.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of AMEDEO, T Clark stated that after being loaded the horse became fractious and lunged at the front gates.

He said however that the horse took no harm from this incident and began well when the field was released.

He said he rode AMEDEO along in the early stages in an endeavour to cross runners to his inside, however, approaching the 800 Metres it became apparent to him that he would not be able to clear LUCKY RED and GOLD EDITION to his inside.

He said for this reason he steadied AMEDEO and took a trailing position behind LUCKY RED.

He added after obtaining a position one off behind the leaders, AMEDEO came under pressure near the 500 Metres and, despite being ridden along, did not respond to his riding thereafter and was most disappointing.

A veterinary inspection of AMEDEO and LUCKY RED after the race did not show any significant findings.

After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that RAINBOW FIGHTER had lost its left front plate.

GOLD EDITION and LOADS OF JOY were sent for sampling.
