Recap by phillip woo

Frederick Engels was patiently ridden, cornered in four deep, switched off a tiring Lucky Red at the 120m and quickened brilliantly to get up 10m from the line for the win with a switch to Happy Valley and a drop in grade. He's more switched off this season following a gelding operation in July and remains one to follow over this course or on the dirt. Early favourite, Simple settled second from the rear and two deep, cornered with a ton of work ahead of him with widest out and finished up willingly to make it close at the finish. Plunged to jump favourite, Glory Horsie was nicely rated in fourth along the fence, worked to the lead at the 100m and was swamped late. Charity Spirit was caught three deep before settling in with cover in midfield at the 700m, rallied five wide upon straightening and finished up well to miss third by a whisker. All Victory settled behind midfield and one off the fence, straightened near the inside and kept up a steady gallop late. Lucky Red dictated the running, straightened a length on top and gave way over the last 100m. Diamond Elegance wasn't fully tested when short of room over the last 150m.

Racing Incident Report

Race Nine: (109) - THE MANAWATU RACING CLUB CHALLENGE TROPHY (HANDICAP) - Class 3 - 1000 Meters DIAMOND ELEGANCE was slow to begin.

SIMPLE was crowded for room at the start between GOLD EDITION and HAWTHORNE which shifted in abruptly.

In this incident, SIMPLE bumped GOLD EDITION which became unbalanced.

Shortly after the start, KA WAI FORTUNE was steadied away from the heels of ALL VICTORY which shifted in.

From the outside barrier, NINTH GALAXY was taken across behind runners shortly after the start.

Near the 600 Metres, KA WAI FORTUNE, which was reluctant to maintain its position, was checked and lost ground when racing tight inside ALL VICTORY which shifted in slightly.

Making the turn after the 600 Metres, GLORY HORSIE was momentarily crowded for room inside HAWTHORNE which shifted in when allowing AMEDEO to cross.

Near the 500 Metres, KA WAI FORTUNE shifted in of its own accord, made contact with the running rail and became badly unbalanced.

Passing the 200 Metres, GOLD EDITION shifted in and bumped HAWTHORNE, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced.

Near the 100 Metres, DIAMOND ELEGANCE was steadied away from the heels of CHARITY SPIRIT (R Fourie) which shifted in when not properly clear.

R Fourie was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he makes every endeavour to prevent his mounts from shifting ground in future.

Also near the 100 Metres, ALL VICTORY was shifted to the outside of GLORY HORSIE when unable to obtain clear running to the inside of that horse.

A veterinary inspection of AMEDEO and DIAMOND ELEGANCE after the race did not show any significant findings.

GLORY HORSIE, FREDERICK ENGELS and SIMPLE were sent for sampling.
