Recap by phillip woo

Plunged late in betting to start favourite, Absolute Fantasy settled fourth and one off the fence, straightened five deep, loomed a winning chance and was badly hampered 20m out by Racing Hero. He was eventually promoted to the top spot by the Stewards' because of the interference caused by Racing Hero. Racing Hero punched the breeze in second outside the leader Slick Bullet, worked to the lead at the 100m and ran out when planted a right whip at the 30m to sharply bump Absolute Fantasy while crossing the wire on top. He was relegated to second after a stewards' inquiry. Slick Bullet quickly cleared to lead from a wide gate, set slow fractions while cornering a length on top and grudgingly gave way late. Early favourite, Peri Peri Saffron settled behind midfield and on the rails, straightened three deep and finished up reasonably well to just grab fourth in his course debut. He was beaten by the slow fractions. Forgive And Forget was eventually shuffled back to last from an outside gate, circled the field four deep at the 850m to get to fifth at the 400m, cornered in with one wider out and kept on all right, before coming up one-paced over the last 100m.

Racing Incident Report

Race Eight: (258) - YUK SAU HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1650 Meters EURO SWIFTLY was slow to begin and shortly after the start was taken across behind runners.

Near the 1300 Metres, MING HOI TREASURE, which was proving difficult to settle, struck the heels of LEGEND EXPRESS and shifted out abruptly, resulting in FORGIVE AND FORGET being hampered and also having to shift out when being checked away from the heels of MING HOI TREASURE.

After the 800 Metres, FORGIVE AND FORGET raced three wide and without cover.

XILAI XIANZI had difficulty obtaining clear running until near the 200 Metres.

The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred approaching the 50 Metres which cast sufficient doubt on whether RACING HERO should be declared the winner of the race.

Subsequently Y T Cheng, the rider of ABSOLUTE FANTASY, 2nd placegetter, lodged a protest/objection against RACING HERO (Z Purton) being declared the winner alleging interference to his mount approaching the 50 Metres.

After taking evidence from all parties concerned and after viewing the videos, the Stewards found that approaching the 50 Metres ABSOLUTE FANTASY, which was making ground to the outside of RACING HERO, was bumped heavily on two occasions by that horse which shifted out.

It was further established that after this incident ABSOLUTE FANTASY then continued to make ground on RACING HERO in the run to the finishing line.

Having in mind the manner in which ABSOLUTE FANTASY was closing off the race, the degree of the interference and the margin between the two horses at the end of the race, the Stewards were comfortably satisfied that had the interference not have occurred ABSOLUTE FANTASY would have finished in front of RACING HERO.

Accordingly, they sustained the protest/objection and amended the placings to reads No.

12, ABSOLUTE FANTASY, 1st; No.

4, RACING HERO, 2nd; No.

5, SLICK BULLET, 3rd; and No.

10, PERI PERI SAFFRON, 4th.

At a subsequent inquiry, Z Purton pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that he permitted RACING HERO to shift out near the 50 Metres, resulting in the interference to ABSOLUTE FANTASY and was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday, 10 January 2013 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays).

The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Tuesday, 1 January 2013.

When ABSOLUTE FANTASY was taken out, FORGIVE AND FORGET was hampered when obliged to shift out away from the heels of that horse.

After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on FLYING UNICORN at the request of Trainer A T Millard.

The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse's trachea.

A veterinary inspection of XILAI XIANZI and FORGIVE AND FORGET after the race did not show any significant findings.

ABSOLUTE FANTASY and RACING HERO were sent for sampling.

GENERAL : 1.

Races 3 - 8 were each put back 5 minutes.

2.

16 December 2012 Sha Tin Racemeeting - Race 11 (250) The Stewards interviewed C Y Ho regarding his riding of LUCKY GAINS, particularly making the turn near the 800 Metres.

C Y Ho stated that he had been instructed to shift his mount across behind runners in the early stages and to ride it in a position behind midfield as it had previously raced best in Hong Kong when ridden in this manner.

He also said that he was advised that LUCKY GAINS had previously hung out in its races rounding turns and he was further advised to keep the horse balanced if possible to prevent it from hanging out again.

He said it was hoped that he may be able to obtain a position following GREEN MANNER if possible.

He said in accordance with his instructions, he eased LUCKY GAINS across in the early stages and after GREEN MANNER was ridden along to improve its position after being slow to begin, he was able to shift in and follow that horse passing the 1100 Metres.

He said he continued to follow that horse and was comfortable with the position he had obtained, however, making the turn after the 900 Metres ALPHA GRAND, which was positioned to his inside, shifted out slightly towards the heels of GREEN MANNER.

He said he was reluctant to ride LUCKY GAINS along at this time having in mind that the horse had previously hung out making turns and he was of the opinion that the tempo of the race had also quickened at this time.

He added he would have preferred to maintain this position behind GREEN MANNER, however, he felt that, given LUCKY GAINS' previous racing manners, that it was best not to ride the horse along at this time.

He said because of this LUCKY GAINS was not able to maintain its position on the back of GREEN MANNER and after the 800 Metres FINN MACCOOL was able to shift away from the rail and obtain the position that LUCKY GAINS had previously occupied.

He added he placed LUCKY GAINS under pressure rounding the Home Turn in order to follow FINN MACCOOL through in the Straight as it had previously closed off well in its races.

He said after placing LUCKY GAINS under full pressure in the Straight, the horse finished off the race strongly.

C Y Ho was advised that his riding of LUCKY GAINS making the first turn until near the 700 Metres had come under notice and, in the opinion of the Stewards, he should have made more of an effort to maintain his position behind GREEN MANNER.

He was further advised to ensure that he rides his mounts in such a manner that they maintain favourable positions and so that his riding is not open to question.
