Recap by phillip woo

Military Attack was patiently ridden behind midfield and one off the fence, swung the final bend with one wider out and finished up willingly to get up 30m from the line for the win. Favourite Helene Spirit settled fourth and on the rails, split the leaders at the 200m to hit the front 100m out and found one too good in the dying stages. Beauty Lead settled midfield and one off the fence, turned the final bend five wide and finished up nicely to just miss second in a bob of heads off a light weight. He's come into his own this season and remains one to follow. Plunged late, Aomen settled third and one off the rails, was under the pump 500m out, cornered in four deep and kept battling away a distant fourth. Pure Champion made his run third from the rear after a sluggish break, turned the final bend with two wider out and ran on steadily without ever threatening off a big weight. Same World led early on before handing up to Fun Rider at the 1,200m, reclaimed the front at the 300m and found a few too smart over the final 150m with late-market support. Irian bided his time behind midfield and on the fence, cornered in four deep and came up one-paced one asked for an effort. Fun Rider but under pressure soon after straightening and struggling 200m out.

Racing Incident Report

Race Seven: (304)-THE JANUARY CUP (HANDICAP) - Hong Kong Group Three - 1800 Metres MR BOND was withdrawn on 7.1.13 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore).

Before being allowed to race again, MR BOND will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

When questioned, W M Lai (FUN RIDER) stated that he had been instructed to ride the horse at the rear of the field from the outside barrier.

He said he shifted FUN RIDER across in the early stages and had hoped to obtain a position one horse off the rail outside MILITARY ATTACK which he anticipated may shift in to race on the rail behind IRIAN and in advance of PURE CHAMPION.

He said however that MILITARY ATTACK remained racing in a one-off position and for this reason FUN RIDER was then left racing three wide and without cover.

He said after making contact with DESTINED FOR GLORY after the 1600 Metres, FUN RIDER commenced to over-race and passing the winning post on the first occasion took charge.

He added that despite attempting to restrain FUN RIDER, the horse pulled its way forward and therefore he allowed it to continue on to race in the lead rather than continue to fight against the horse.

MILITARY ATTACK and HELENE SPIRIT were sent for sampling.
