Recap by phillip woo

Taknam was in no hurry from gate 14, cornered with one behind him and one off the fence, angled out looking for a run at the 250m, switched further out off the heels of Noble Alpha at the 150m and quickened up nicely to get up 50m from the line for the win. Wrath Of Fire settled behind midfield and one off the fence, switched into the clear with two wider out at the 250m and finished up well to overhaul Beauty Lead 50m out for second. Beauty Lead was pestered for the front by Business As Usual, straightened narrowly on top and kept on gamely off a big weight. Business As Usual strode forward from a wide gate to settle outside the leader, straightened three deep and kept on well to inject value into the First-4. Beauty Touch was switched second from the rear from a wide gate, shifted into the clear with two wider out at the 300m and was hitting the line with purpose. Best Show settled midfield and one off the rails, rallied five wide and ran on steadily late in an improved effort. Noble Alpha was posted three wide with cover in fifth and gave way over the last 100m. Scarlet Camellia was never on the course around midfield, rounded the final bend outside Best Show and made only a mild bid without looking a chance. Real Generous was pushed back twice in the run and never fired. Percy Jackson covered ground and was never a factor. Hot Shot was struggling 200m out.

Racing Incident Report

Race Ten: (333)-RIVER VERDON HANDICAP - Class 2 - 1800 Metres GARLIC BOY was withdrawn on 18.1.13 after obtaining a run in Race 7 and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter BEAUTY TOUCH (F Coetzee).

MR MEDICI was slow to begin.

From the outside barrier, TAKNAM was taken across behind runners shortly after the start.

Near the 1600 Metres, REAL GENEROUS momentarily raced in restricted room between BEST SHOW and NOBLE ALPHA.

Approaching and passing the 1200 Metes, HOT SHOT was awkwardly placed close to the heels of BUSINESS AS USUAL.

Passing the 200 Metres, KING OF SCOTS and BEST SHOW bumped.

A short distance later, HOT SHOT, which was commencing to give ground, was steadied away from the heels of TAKNAM (U Rispoli) which shifted out.

KING OF SCOTS and BEST SHOW, which were racing to the outside of HOT SHOT, were also hampered in consequence.

U Rispoli was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care.

Also passing the 200 Metres, REAL GENEROUS was held up when unable to obtain clear running.

SCARLET CAMELLIA travelled wide and without cover throughout the race and for the majority of the race NOBLE ALPHA also travelled wide and without cover.

The performance of BACKBENCH BLUES, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable.

Before being allowed to race again, BACKBENCH BLUES will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

After the race, Apprentice C Y Lui advised that he had been instructed to lead on HOT SHOT if possible.

He said after having to ride his mount along in the early stages, in his opinion, HOT SHOT did not show sufficient speed to lead without him having to continue to ride the horse along vigorously.

Also after the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that BACKBENCH BLUES had lost its left front plate.

A veterinary inspection of HOT SHOT, PERCY JACKSON and REAL GENEROUS after the race did not show any significant findings.

REAL GENEROUS, TAKNAM and WRATH OF FIRE were sent for sampling.
