Recap by phillip woo

California Memory settled nicely in midfield and one off the rails, cornered in five deep behind horses, ducked underneath one off the rails for a clear run at the 350m, powered to the front 150m out and held on gamely for a ninth win in his first attempt over 2,400m. Willie Cazals was switched off at the rear and let down nicely once turning for home to easily run down favourite Dominant for second and complete a stable quinella. It was a huge effort in defeat and he'll be one to follow over 2,000m to 2,400m next season. Dominant was prominently ridden in fourth and one off the rails, briefly hit the front at the 200m and kept on for a clear third. Plunged late, Irian enjoyed the box-seat run and was grinding away to just collar leader Liberator, who rolled forward after a slow break to eventually lead leaving the straight for the first time and and was giving ground passing the 200m. Autumn Gold didn't make much of an impression, along with Thumbs Up. Fay Fay settled second in the run and was struggling soon after straightening. He didn't see out the trip.
