Recap by phillip woo

Crackerjack picked up quickly after a slow start to settle midfield and on the rails in a compact and small field, shifted off heels into the clear four deep at the 400m and finished off well to take control 200m out for a clear-cut win for his new trainer Tony Millard. He proved too classy with a drop in grade. Follow The Wind bided his time at the rear until the 1,000m following a sluggish break, had two behind him coming to the final bend three deep and finished up nicely between runners to snatch runner-up inside the final 50m. Late-fancied favourite Turbo Jewellery was never on the course third from the rear, swung the final bend widest out and was grinding away to just grab third ahead of Spirit Soaring, who inched to the front rounding the final bend after stalking the moderate pace of Blossom Daily and lost a placing 50m out. Blossom Daily took a bit of time to clear for the lead at the 1,200m, was headed entering the final bend and grudgingly gave way over the final 150m. Mega Champion enjoyed the box-seat run, stayed to the inside upon straightening and was disappointing when popped the question. Early favourite Better Announce settled midfield and one off in the run until forced out without cover at the 600m, swung the final bend with two wider out and found surprisingly nothing over the last 200m.

Racing Incident Report

Race One: (073)-BEGONIA HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1600Metres

CRACKERJACK was slow to begin and then shortly after the start was steadied away from the heels of BETTER ANNOUNCE which shifted out abruptly on jumping.

Despite being vigorously ridden along in the early stages, TURBO JEWELLERY failed to muster speed and after the 1500 Metres was steadied and taken back in an attempt to obtain cover.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of BETTER ANNOUNCE, M Chadwick stated that he had been asked to try and obtain cover on the horse in a forward position.

He said in accordance with his instructions, he allowed SPIRIT SOARING to cross BETTER ANNOUNCE after the 1200 Metres.

He said shortly after this the pace of the race slackened and after momentarily being awkwardly placed close to the heels of SPIRIT SOARING near the 1000 Metres, BETTER ANNOUNCE came off the bridle.

He said near the 800 Metres, despite him riding BETTER ANNOUNCE along, his mount was not able to maintain its position and he was unable to prevent CRACKERJACK from shifting away from the rail.

He added he was obliged to ride BETTER ANNOUNCE along to improve its position around CRACKERJACK to prevent being taken wider still and at the entrance to the Straight raced tight with CRACKERJACK which again shifted out into clear running.

He said BETTER ANNOUNCE did not travel well for the majority of the race and, in his opinion, raced disappointingly.

A veterinary inspection of BETTER ANNOUNCE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
