Recap by phillip woo

Rewarding Hero had to pass a vet test before the start but quickened nicely from near the back and with one wider to land the spoils close to home as the late-fancied favourite. He's unbeaten in two outings this season and remains one to follow off a light weight in the next grade. Mr Gnocchi was taken back to last from the widest draw, was still at the rear and widest out at the 350m and stretched out nicely over the final 200m to make it close at the wire. He'll be hard to beat from a proper gate next time out. Glorious Sunday travelled with cover two off the rails in midfield, worked home nicely in the center of the course but found the top pair a couple bobs better on the line. Yee Cheong Star had a change of tactics and was taken straight to the front, cornered nearly two lengths clear and was swamped in the final 50m. He's made a nice impression in his three local runs and won't be far off a winning run. Victory Hero settled fourth from the rear and along the rails, stayed to the inside upon straightening and was getting going late over the final 150m in a much-improved effort with blinkers on.

Racing Incident Report

MOSER & CIE EXCELLENT HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1400Metres

After being loaded, REWARDING HERO became fractious and reared.

REWARDING HERO was removed from the barriers and examine by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.

Before being allowed to race again, REWARDING HERO will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test.

SUN PINS began awkwardly and shortly after the start was crowded for room between ATACX and MR GNOCCHI which shifted out.

From the outside barrier, MR GNOCCHI was taken across behind runners shortly after the start.

TRUMP began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped SUPER LIFELINE which in turn was taken out onto STRATHTAY.

Approaching the 1300 Metres, MR GNOCCHI was bumped by VICTORY HERO which in turn was bumped by YEE CHEONG STAR.

Approaching the 800 Metres, GLACIER BLUE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of HELENE FUN STAR.

Near the 300 Metres, TRUMP and HELENE FUN STAR, which was giving ground, were crowded for room between SUN PINS and GLACIER BLUE which got its head on the side and shifted in under pressure.

SUPER LIFELINE, which had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of Straight, was shifted out away from the heels of GLACIER BLUE near the 200 Metres.

SUPER LIFELINE was then held up for clear running behind GLACIER BLUE and ATACX for some distance after the 200 Metres and passing the 100 Metres was again awkwardly placed outside the heels of GLACIER BLUE.

Because of this, SUPER LIFELINE was not able to be properly tested in the Straight.

Over the concluding stages, VICTORY HERO, which was closing off strongly, was unable to be ridden out to the line when awkwardly placed close to the heels of YEE CHEONG STAR.

For the majority of the race, ATACX travelled wide and without cover.

Mr L Ho, the trainer of YEE CHEONG STAR, which was racing over 1400 Metres for the first time in Hong Kong, advised that was his intention to have the horse ridden in a forward position today.

He said at its last start at Happy Valley over 1200 Metres, the horse had drawn wide and for this reason it was ridden back in the field.

When questioned, Z Purton stated that, from barrier 7, he had been instructed to shift MR GINGER across behind runners and ride the horse similarly to the manner in which it was ridden at its last start when it closed off the race strongly.

He said after shifting across behind runners in the early stages, MR GINGER became unbalanced in its action on a number of occasions and when asked for an effort in the Straight failed to respond to his riding and, in his opinion, was disappointing.

Trainer C Fownes advised that after beginning from barrier 12 at its most recent start which was its first start for his stable, MR GINGER closed of the race strongly when ridden in a rearward position.

He said he anticipated that the horse would again be able to close off the race if ridden in a similar manner.

He added he had hoped that MR GINGER would be able to eventually step up in distance to 1600 Metres and he wanted to ensure that the horse was able to settle in its races to give it every opportunity to see out the longer distance.

He said, in his opinion, the horse was disappointing today in its failure to respond to Jockey Purton's riding.

A veterinary inspection of MR GINGER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

A veterinary inspection of SUPER LIFELINE and GLACIER BLUE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

REWARDING HERO and MR GNOCCHI were sent for sampling.

Omission from Racing Incidents Report of 23 October 2013 Happy Valley Racemeeting - Race 6 (106) Following the running of this race, the Stewards interviewed K C Leung regarding GREAT CHARM being disappointed for running approaching and rounding the Home Turn and then being held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight.

K C Leung stated that near the 450 Metres he commenced to shift GREAT CHARM to the outside of AMAZINGLY in an endeavour to secure clear running.

He said as he did this, TURBO JEWELLERY improved quickly to his outside and at the same time AMAZINGLY was shifted out from behind CHAMPAGNE DAYS.

He said as TURBO JEWELLERY quickened better than GREAT CHARM and also due to AMAZINGLY shifting out, GREAT CHARM was not able to establish its position between those horses and consequently had to be steadied after being disappointed for running.

He added after this GREAT CHARM was held up for clear running behind AMAZINGLY and inside TURBO JEWELLERY and it was not until after the 300 Metres that GREAT CHARM was able to secure clear running.
