Recap by phillip woo

Firming favourite Gold-Fun was sweating on the back of the leader Helene Spirit from the outset, moved one off for a clear run at the 300m, worked to the front at the 200m and just held that one off for a narrow win. Helene Spirit strolled forward one off the rails to lead outright at the 1,400m, cornered a length on top after setting a moderate pace and went down fighting. Real Specialist settled midfield and on the rails, was short of room early straight three deep and quickened well with clear running at the 300m for third with late-market support. California Memory made his run third from the rear and near the rails, straightened four deep and was finishing up nicely in a blanket finish of four for fourth off a big weight. He remains a key player when stepping over 2,000m plus. Rainbow Chic settled midfield and one off the rails, pulled off heels with two wider out at the 400m and ran on steadily late. Military Attack bided his time second from the rear and one off the rails, had no running room until switching off heels into the clear with two wider out at the 250m and ran on nicely thereafter carrying top weight.

Racing Incident Report

Race Eight: (116)-THE ORIENTAL WATCH SHA TIN TROPHY (HANDICAP) - Hong Kong Group Two - 1600Metres

As the start was effected, DAN EXCEL lifted its front feet off the ground and began awkwardly.

When being steadied from a wide barrier in order to be taken across behind runners in the early stage, XTENSION got it head up on a number of occasions.

CALIFORNIA MEMORY had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.

REAL SPECIALIST was held up for clear running until near the 300 Metres.

MILITARY ATTACK was unable to obtain clear running until passing the 250 Metres.

Approaching the 200 Metres, XTENSION was checked away from the heels of DAN EXCEL.

Then after this, XTENSION continued to be awkwardly place close to the heels of DAN EXCEL and near the 150 Metres was again checked away from the heels of that horse which, when giving ground, shifted out marginally.

Near the 50 Metres, DAN EXCEL was awkwardly placed outside the heels of AKEED MOFEED.

For the majority of the race, PURE CHAMPION travelled wide and without cover.

When questioned regarding his riding of AKEED MOFEED in the early part of the Straight, D Whyte stated that as the horse hung in badly at its most recent start, he anticipated that that may again be the case.

He said for this reason he placed pressure on his left rein in the early stages of the Straight so as to be prepared should the horse again hang in.

He said however that unlike at its last start, AKEED MOFEED today shifted out in the early part of the Straight which allowed GOLD-FUN to improve its position to the inside of AKEED MOFEED.

He said that AKEED MOFEED continued to lay out under pressure in the Straight which was in contrast to its first up run this reason.

He added after the race he advised Trainer R Gibson to consider applying blinkers to AKEED MOFEED as, in his opinion, the horse is not racing genuinely.

D Whyte was advised that his explanation would be noted, however, he must ensure that, wherever possible, he rides his mounts in a competitive manner.

After the race, J Moreira reported that DOMINANT was not striding out comfortably in the Straight and weakened noticeably over the concluding stages.

A veterinary inspection of DOMINANT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Before being allowed to race again, DOMINANT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

A veterinary inspection of DAN EXCEL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

GOLD-FUN and HELENE SPIRIT were sent for sampling.
