Recap by phillip woo

Firming late, Step High was patiently ridden second from the rear and one off the rails, swung the final bend with one wider out and let down well, despite hanging in under pressure to take control 150m out for a third straight win. Starting Over was patiently ridden third from the back along the fence, rounded the final bend three deep and finished strongly to get up 30m out for the Quinella spot with the quick back-up off a weekend failure. Zachary was rated three back along the rails, moved to fourth at the 500m, stayed to the inside upon straightening and came up one-paced over the final 100m as the firming favourite. He had no excuses. Super Team switched off at the tail of the field, pushed widest out upon straightening, loomed a place chance at the 200m and peaked on his run 100m out with a return to Class Four. Cool Bean settled worse than midfield and one off the rails, rounded the final bend and came up one-paced over the final 200m with every chance. All The Winners worked a bit to lead from a wide gate, had a length on them upon straightening and was gone at the 150m. Safari Magic made his run one off in third behind the leaders All The Winners, was forced deeper out at the 700m by Costa Del Sol, copped up bump taking the final bend five deep and was struggling 200m out. Favourite Southern Springs was withdrawn at the gate.

SURE CHAMP was withdrawn on 14.1.14 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore).

Before being allowed to race again, SURE CHAMP will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

On arrival at the Start, D Whyte expressed concern regarding the action of SOUTHERN SPRINGS.

SOUTHERN SPRINGS was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion the horse was lame in the left front leg and accordingly was not suitable to race.

Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of SOUTHERN SPRINGS.

Before being allowed to race again, SOUTHERN SPRINGS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

STARTING OVER shifted out at the start and bumped COOL BEAN.

SAFARI MAGIC was bumped on jumping by STEP HIGH which shifted in.

SAFARI MAGIC then shifted in and made contact with COSTA DEL SOL.

SUPER TEAM was taken across behind runners shortly after the start.

Near the 850 Metres, SAFARI MAGIC was bumped and taken wider by COSTA DEL SOL (Apprentice K C Ng) which shifted to the outside of ALL THE WINNERS.

Apprentice Ng was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.

After this, SAFARI MAGIC was left racing in a three wide position without cover.

Approaching the 600 Metres, COSTA DEL SOL and SAFARI MAGIC raced tight.

Rounding the Home Turn, SAFARI MAGIC raced tight between STEP HIGH and COOL BEAN which shifted out marginally when awkwardly placed close to the heels of COSTA DEL SOL.

Near the 250 Metres, SAFARI MAGIC was awkwardly placed outside the heels of COOL BEAN.

After the race, Apprentice C Y Lui reported that ALL THE WINNERS was inclined to hang out for the majority of the race.

A veterinary inspection of COOL BEAN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

ZACHARY, STEP HIGH and STARTING OVER were sent for sampling.
