Recap by phillip woo

Favourite Redwood Baby settled behind midfield along the rails, improved a position at the 800m, shifted into the clear four deep at the 250m and let down willingly to take control 120m out for a maiden win at this third start. He flashes a lot of potential and remains one to follow. Happy Centenary settled one off in second, raced to the front three deep at the 200m and kept plugging away when headed to grab second in a blanket finish for the minors. Hammered late in betting, Funny Fortune led early on before settling in the box-seat, stuck to the fence upon straightening and kept on gamely to just hold third. He appears from his past two to have come to hand and won't be far off a winning run. Owners' Glory settled one-out, one-back, rounded the final bend five deep and ran on steadily to finish on the short end of a thrilling three-horse photo. Dragon Pins was half-carting three back in the run, cornered with three wider out and made only a minor bid. He was anchored by the weight. Eagle Spirit settled third from the rear and near the rails, straightened four deep and made some ground late without menacing. China Delight made his run second from the rear, took off at the 600m, straightened with one wider out and run ended 150m out.

Racing Incident Report

Race Four: (328)-SZE MEI HANDICAP - Class 4 - 1800Metres

HOLY MAC was crowded for room at the start between EAGLE SPIRIT and CHINA DELIGHT, both of which shifted ground.

A short distance later, EAGLE SPIRIT was momentarily steadied when crowded for room between EVERSPRING and HOLY MAC which shifted in.

Passing the winning post on the first occasion, FUNNY FORTUNE was steadied to avoid the heels of PERFECT MOMENT (C K Tong) which shifted in when not properly clear.

C K Tong was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he fulfils his obligation to be sufficiently clear when shifting ground in future.

Making the Home Turn, DRAGON PINS was bumped by REDWOOD BABY which shifted out to improve.

Then shortly after straightening, DRAGON PINS was shifted out away from the heels of OWNERS' GLORY to obtain clear running.

Near the 250 Metres, FUNNY FORTUNE momentarily raced in restricted room inside PERFECT MOMENT which got its head on the side and shifted in.

Passing the 200 Metres, DRAGON PINS got is head on the side and shifted out, resulting in inconvenience being caused to CHINA DELIGHT, FLYING IN and EVERSPRING.

Close to the finishing line, HOLY MAC was directed out away from the heels of EAGLE SPIRIT.

When questioned, G Mosse stated that he had been instructed to position CHINA DELIGHT at the rear of the field and ensure the horse was relaxed in the early stages.

He said he was advised that if the tempo of the race was not strong, he should commence to improve his position around runners after the 800 Metres.

He said in accordance with his instructions he shifted CHINA DELIGHT across to race at the rear of the field and his mount commenced to over-race after the 1100 Metres due to the slow tempo.

He said after having to be steadied away from EVERSPRING for some distance approaching the 900 Metres, in accordance with his instructions, he shifted his mount to the outside of that horse and commenced to improve his position after the 800 Metres as the tempo of the race at this time was not strong.

He added because of this CHINA DELIGHT was then left racing wide and without cover for the remainder of the race.

When questioned regarding HAPPY CENTENARY being ridden in a forward position, B Prebble stated that it was explained to him as the horse was only having its 5th start and was stepping up in distance to 1800 Metres, he should allow it to race where it was comfortable.

He said it was anticipated that the race would not be run at a fast tempo and it was felt that the horse may be able to race in a more forward position than it had been in its starts so far over shorter distances.

He added HAPPY CENTENARY began well and was able to take up a forward position without having to be ridden along at any stage.

A veterinary inspection of CHINA DELIGHT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

REDWOOD BABY and HAPPY CENTENARY were sent for sampling.
