The Hong Kong women’s sevens team dominated the Margaret River Sevens on their debut at the weekend, winning the title with an emphatic 29-5 Cup final victory over the Cottesloe Chicks.
Hong Kong ran off seven straight wins without loss and scored 241 points – an average of nearly 35 points per game – while conceding only 25.
Aggie Poon Pak-yan was the side’s top scorer with seven tries and 12 conversions for 59 points, while tour captain Natasha Olson-Thorne and squad veteran Lai Pou-fan added 30 points apiece.
“In the absence of some of our more experienced players, the hope for this weekend was that others would step up and show us what they could do,” said HKRFU women’s coach Mark Komar.
“The squad did just that with all of the girls putting on an impressive performance, scoring a total of 39 tries over the weekend, with everyone getting their names on the score sheet.
“Scores aside, their performance improved game after game, as did their confidence. Winning in Margaret River has set the standard for the rest of the squad, and has built great momentum going into our next tournament in Borneo in two weeks,” Komar added.
