Rugby and racing join forces to make Hong Kong’s sevens week bigger and better
Hong Kong China Rugby, Hong Kong Jockey Club, Hong Kong Football Club hope to bring more cohesion to biggest week in city’s sports calendar
An expanded Hong Kong 10s tournament and midweek racing at Happy Valley are among the changes being made to this year’s sevens week in the city, as the landmark tournament celebrates its 50th birthday in April.
For the first time, a partnership between Hong Kong China Rugby, the Hong Kong Jockey Club and Hong Kong Football Club will bring an element of cohesion to what is traditionally the biggest week in the city’s sporting calendar.
Rugby and racing will work in tandem through the week, with the announcement of the Hong Kong men’s and women’s teams planned for Sha Tin on Sunday, April 12, and the Wednesday race meeting expected to feature a sevens theme.
“We are delighted to be able to expand our long-running and successful collaboration with the Hong Kong Jockey Club and HKFC,” Chris Brooke, the HKCR chairman, said.
“Our organisations share a similar vision for the role that sport can play in our community. With the support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, we have been able to share the experience and values of rugby with literally thousands of people from all over Hong Kong and within the Greater Bay Area.
“We look forward to growing these numbers together with the Hong Kong Jockey Club and HKFC even further in the future.”
