The Hong Kong team played in the Plate Final (third-place match) yesterday to cap off a roller-coaster week of competition in the Asian Rugby Football Union Under-19 Tournament. Hong Kong secured their place in the under-19 World Cup finals, to be held in Paris, France, in April with wins over Sri Lanka, China and Singapore last week. But when nine first-choice SAR players were rested or injured for the tough game against Japan last Thursday, the hosts were humiliated. Japan, a top Asian side, ran in 15 tries and won by a cricket score - 89-0. But last Friday Hong Kong clinched the last qualification spot for the April finals thanks to Taiwan beating Kazakhstan 45-0. The result meant Hong Kong would go to France even if they failed to win their Plate Final against Taiwan yesterday. Taiwan, Japan and South Korea had already qualified for France before the tournament started. See today's sports section of the SCMP to find out yesterday's Bowl, Plate and Cup Final results.
