Hong Kong Corporate Sevens raises money to help young deaf people
The tournament went off with a bang at So Kon Po and organisers expect to go close to hitting their target of HK$1 million
The Hong Kong Corporate Sevens went off with a bang at So Kon Po on the weekend, with the fourth edition of the annual event raising money for the Deaf Rugby Programme.
The programme aims to bring together the work the Hong Kong Rugby Union’s Community Foundation has been doing with deaf rugby and the Chinese University’s Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies’ Sign Bilingual Education programme.
Organisers hoped to raise HK$1 million to do this and in turn help young deaf people tackle isolation, understanding, self-esteem and language skills, among other things.
While the final amount raised is not yet known, organisers expect to go close to their goal after an action-packed day that offered plenty for players and spectators.
A new format including tag sevens ensured a bigger and more sociable tournament, with both a men’s pool and a mixed pool.
A record 20 teams took part, with Swire Property winning the men’s competition and CBRE taking out the mixed.
