HK, playing in the Qualifier tournament to win a place on the World Series, were neck and neck against a powerful German side, 7-7 as the hooter sounded to signal full time.

But with the ball still in play, Germany's Bastian Himmer took a quick tap-pen and sprinted almost the length of the field to end Hong Kong's hopes at the quarter-final stage. Jamie Hood had scored HK's equaliser after Sebastian Fromm opened the scoring.

"We put ourselves in this position but the way we played this morning that Chile game cost us this tournament in my opinion," said coach Paul John – HK were hammered 31-0 by Chile to finish second in the group.

"We were a little bit complacent this morning and didn’t perform at our best and as a result we ended up playing Germany rather than somebody else"

In the main event, after slumping to a shock 17-17 draw against Wales, the Olympic gold medallists Fiji managed a narrow 17-14 win over New Zealand in their final pool game to stay on course for the finals in a game they had to win to top the group.

It was relatively serene progression for the other favourites, though England were upset by Australia 12-10 in one of the day's best games.

Sunday's quarter-finals, starting at 10:58, look like this:

Australia v Argentina

Fiji v Canada

USA v England

South Africa v New Zealand

The Qualifier tournament semis see Chile take on Germany, and Papua New Guinea v Spain.
