Gwen Stefani to perform at Central Harbourfront as part of Hong Kong Sevens festivities

  • The 49-year-old has won three Grammy awards, two with her band No Doubt and another with rapper Eve
  • The singer first came to prominence in 1995 when No Doubt released their hit single ‘Don’t Speak’
One of the biggest names in the music industry, three-time Grammy winner Gwen Stefani, will perform in the city in April as part of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens week festivities.

The 49-year-old singer, songwriter and actor will put on a show on Friday, April 5 – the first day of the Hong Kong Sevens – at Central Harbourfront, according to a source who is close to the Hong Kong Rugby Union.

Hong Kong Sevens organisers have yet to announce the on-field acts at this year’s tournament, which has in the past feature the likes of The Proclaimers, Smash Mouth – who are playing in Singapore this year – and British cult group Madness.

Stefani, who fronts the band No Doubt and is in a relationship with country singer Blake Shelton, is arguably the biggest name to feature in the entertainment and festivities surrounding the Hong Kong Sevens.

The California native first came to prominence in 1995 after No Doubt released their third album Tragic Kingdom, which spawned the smash hit Don’t Speak and Just A Girl.

She has also release four solo studio albums between 2004 and 2017, selling more than 9 million copies.

Stefani, who was inspired as a child by Blondie singer Debbie Harry, won her first Grammy award in 2001 for her part in the hit song by rapper Eve, Let Me Blow Ya Mind, which won the prize for best rap/song collaboration.

The following year, she and her No Doubt bandmates won the Grammy for best pop performance by a duo or group with vocal for Hey Baby. They repeated their victory in 2003 in the same category for Underneath It All.

The Hong Kong Sevens organisers are ramping up the entertainment factor as rival tournaments, particularly in Singapore and North America, raise their standards and offer more than just rugby for their fans.

The Singapore Sevens, which is one week after the April 5-7 Hong Kong Sevens, was recently given a No 2 ranking in governing body World Rugby’s unofficial assessment of the 10 tournaments on the HSBC World Sevens Series circuit.

The Singapore event won high marks for its facilities and its drive to make the two-day tournament a family affair. Canada’s Vancouver, which hosts the sixth leg of the series this weekend, was ranked number one while Hong Kong could only manage fifth place.

Stefani was previously married to Bush lead singer and guitarist Gavin Rossdale before they divorced in 2016. They have three sons.

The recent tabloid news surrounding Stefani and Shelton is that she has threatened to break-off the relationship if The Voice star doesn’t marry her. The past few days has seen her retweet several of Shelton’s tweets in which he promotes a vodka brand.
