South African sevens player Selvyn Davids stole the show and a few hearts at last year’s Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. The 25-year-old won the tournament MVP after scoring eight tries in six matches, including a hat-trick in their 26-24 semi-final loss to Fiji.

Davids returns to Hong Kong next month with a South African squad sitting fourth (89 points) and looking to keep pace with the USA (113), New Zealand (106) and Fiji (101) in the World Rugby Sevens Series standings.

Davids’ career includes 53 matches, 237 points, 27 tries and 51 conversions for the 1.75-metre, 80-kilogram speedster who hails from Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape province.

He is also known as the architect of what many are calling the ‘try of the year’ at the Canada Sevens in Vancouver this month.

Davids, who sits sixth in overall points, is known for letting his amazing speed and legendary dreadlocks do most of the talking, but he did take some time to chat to the South China Morning Post and answer seven questions before the tournament kicks off next weekend (April 5-7).
