England survived a thrilling fight back from the US to seal a 28-22 victory and top pool D at the Hong Kong Sevens, booking a Cup quarter-final with Samoa.
The US, who now face South Africa in the last eight, were under early pressure and England eventually broke through on the left after some dogged defending by the Eagles, Harry Glover’s try converted by Dan Bibby.

A piece of Dan Norton magic helped get England out to a 14-0 lead, and Phil Burgess lit up Hong Kong Stadium with a third try soon after.
But the US rallied with two tries from Ben Pinkelman before the break and he completed his hat-trick with five minutes to go to, cutting England’s lead to 21-17.
