It was supposed to be a clash of the heavyweights to decide the “group of death” in pool C, but Fiji blew New Zealand away 24-5 at the Hong Kong Sevens on Saturday evening.
The two teams have shared the last eight titles here, but it was defending champions and perennial Hong Kong Stadium favourites Fiji who ran in four tries to go through to the Cup quarter-finals as group winers ahead of the All Blacks Sevens.

Fiji will next face pool B runners-up Argentina, who were beaten 26-14 by France in Saturday’s final world series match. As group winners, France will take on New Zealand.




Fiji were ahead after two minutes, Aminiasi Tuimaba scoring his fourth try of the tournament. A neat offload then allowed Vilimoni Botitu to break through a gap in the middle and go over. And more great handling let in Livai Koroigasagasa to run through and score, with the conversion making it 19-0 at the break.

Substitute Apenisa Cakaubalavu broke through for the fourth try in the second half, before Joseva Ravouvou got New Zealand a consolation try in the final two minutes.

After a bruising earlier defeat by Fiji ensured they were out of the Cup, Australia salvaged a bit of pride with a 28-12 win against Kenya.

Maurice Longbottom and Henry Hutchison tries helped them out to an early 14-0 lead, and Lachlan Miller went over just before the break.
Johnstone Olindi got Kenya on the scoresheet but Huthcison break away through the middle for his second score, giving Australia a 28-7 lead.
Jeffrey Otiento reduced the arrears by powering over late on but the Aussies were too far out of sight – such was the certainty of the result, the crowd seemed more interested in doing repeated Mexican waves.
Fiji earlier continued their title defence with a 31-12 win against Australia, setting up that blockbuster pool C showdown with New Zealand, who had strolled to an easy 36-0 win over Kenya.
Hong Kong Stadium erupted when Tuimaba ran almost the length of the pitch for Fiji’s first score. But Fiji were pegged back when Ben O’Donnell charged in to score down the right.

Order was restored though when Jerry Tuwai and Tuimaba again went over before the break in front of a sweltering South Stand.
Tuwai got his second of the match early in the second half as Fiji continued to dominate, to the delight of their legion of fans in the crowd.




The Fijians kept up the pressure to score again through Vilimoni Botitu. Australia did manage to add another try after overcoming some dogged Fiji defence, with Dylan Pietsch forcing his way through.
Earlier, Ravouvou’s double helped put the All Blacks Sevens 12-0 up at the break against Kenya.

Regan Ware added a quick-fire double of his own in the second half, and Joe Webber scored a sensational fifth try to make it 29-0.
Scott Curry then crossed in the left corner with Andrew Knewstubb kicking his third conversion for 36-0 on an easy afternoon for the Kiwis.
