Fiji great Waisale Serevi mourns boy, 14, who attended Singapore kids’ camp and is reported killed in Sri Lanka bombings

  • The boy’s 42-year-old mother, Anita, was also reported to have been killed while his younger sister is unaccounted for, say British media

Fiji’s rugby sevens legend Waisale Serevi on Monday mourned the loss of “another rugby family” member after it emerged that an 14-year-old British boy who attend his training camp in Singapore was among those killed in the horrific terrorist bombing in Sri Lanka.

British media reported that Alex Nicholson and his mother Anita, 42, are believed to be among those killed when multiple bombs ripped through churches and high-end hotels in the Colombo area and in the eastern town of Batticaloa.

In a Twitter posting on Monday, Serevi started, as he usually does, by mentioning the Bible verse Phil4:13, before writing “@HSBC_Sport #singapore7s kids camp 2019, was our last time. Standing 3rd from left black cap, is Alex Nicholson passed away with his mum in Sri Lanka bombing Sunday, and Im really sad losing another rugby family. Condolence to the family.”

Alex’s father, Ben, is reported to have survived the breakfast-time blast at the Shangri-La hotel in Colombo but his younger sister Annabel is unaccounted for.

Anita Nicholson, according to British media, was a Singapore-based lawyer working as a managing counsel at the mining and metals company Anglo American.

The rugby training camp for kids was held in midweek before the annual Singapore Sevens from April 13-14 and was conducted by Serevi and New Zealand’s women’s player Huriana Manuel. Both are HSBC ambassadors and travel throughout the 10-leg world sevens series.
