Organisers of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens have put tickets on sale to the wider public as preparations continue for the tournament’s return after a three-year absence.
Tickets for the city’s flagship rugby tournament, which is to be held on the weekend of November 4 to 6, went on general sale on Thursday, a day after members of the Hong Kong Rugby Union’s (HKRU’s) mailing list had a chance to buy them.
Thursday’s sale, conducted via the HKRU ticketing website, released 10,000 three-day tickets. Members of local rugby clubs had already bought more than 16,500 in the previous phase of sales over the past few weeks.
A small proportion of tickets have also been held back in case any further loosening of the city’s Covid-19 restrictions for incoming travellers causes there to be a spike in demand from overseas.
Hong Kong Sevens launch: details emerge on tickets, teams and stadium food
Details of the event had been revealed last Friday at the tournament’s official launch, held at the Hong Kong stock exchange.
It was confirmed that the world’s top men’s teams would be taking part, in the form of the 15 core members of the World Sevens Series, with the Hong Kong team making up the numbers as an invited side.
The home team’s reward was to be drawn in a pool alongside sevens giants New Zealand and Australia.
Pandemic restrictions have resulted in the capacity of the 40,000-seat Hong Kong Stadium being capped at 85 per cent.
Prices have been frozen at 2019 levels, with a three-day pass costing HK$1,950 (US$250) for adults and HK$950 for children aged 12 and under.
