A new competition for under 19 girls kicks off this weekend and adds a new dimension to women’s 15s rugby in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Rugby Union’s U19 Girls Colts Championship 15s will play its first matches at Tin Shui Wai Sports Ground on Sunday (October 25).

The Colts Championship 15s is open to all eligible U19s girls players and will run alongside the U19 Girls Colts League with the aim of creating an environment for the players to further develop and showcase their skills in the hope of being noticed by Hong Kong’s national age-grade selectors.

The competition will feature almost one hundred junior girls split into four equally weighted teams based on geographical districts: north, south, east and west.
The HKRU’s new junior girls championship will build on its existing women’s rugby initiatives such as the annual All Girls Rugby Tournament.

The four teams will provide an opportunity for all players to experience a higher level of play than may be seen through their weekly club competitions.

To further enhance the development and talent-identification goals, each Colts Championship team will be assigned a national age-grade coach who will work alongside the club coaches.

The first training session for the competition was held last Sunday with 90 girls taking part.
