As the Hong Kong men's rugby sevens team arrived on Saturday to launch their gold medal campaign, former captain Mark Wright has called on them to learn from their "mistakes" at the last Asian Games in Guangzhou and not to be overconfident.

Wright, who plays in the Japan professional Top League and has been recalled into the squad after four years, warned of the dangers of complacency.

"We need to learn from our mistakes last time. We entered the Guangzhou Games having won our previous two tournaments [in Asian Sevens Series] and we thought we could walk into the final.

"But Sri Lanka and China nearly knocked us out of the gold medal match," Wright recalled.

"We have to play well each game, not taking anyone lightly, and try to get better throughout the tournament to give ourselves the best chance of winning the gold," said Wright who has been released by the Toyota Shokki Shuttles to play at the Asian Games.

The forward was at the helm last time as Hong Kong went down agonisingly to a 28-21 defeat in the gold medal match to Japan even though their opponents were reduced to six men for the last five minutes after a red card.

Wright who will provide cover for young guns Mike Coverdale, Jack Capon and Max Woodward, still regrets missing out on that chance to win a first gold medal in a team sport for Hong Kong at the Asian Games.
