Hong Kong moved a step closer to being crowned Asian champions, finishing unbeaten on the opening day of the final leg of the Asian Sevens Series in Beijing.

The Jamie Hood-led team will meet Thailand in the Cup quarter-finals after topping their pool defeating Taiwan 38-7 and Singapore 33-0.

"Two wins is what we set our sights on as it is important to create a bit of momentum in this Asian Series," said Hong Kong head coach Gareth Baber.

"But the biggest thing is that all 12 of our squad started a game today so that is pleasing. We will have to up our game a little bit tomorrow in terms of accuracy but I'm pleased we have got two victories."

Hong Kong looked the most dangerous of the four seeded teams with rivals Japan almost coming a cropper against a feisty Philippines outfit who came close to pulling off a shock in losing 21-19.

Japan have made 11 changes to the team who won the gold medal at the Asian Games and struggled to defeat China, 26-14. Japan will meet Kazakhstan in the quarter-finals with South Korea taking on Taiwan.
