This season’s English League Cup final could be an all-Manchester affair after cross-town rivals Manchester United and Manchester City avoided each other in Wednesday’s semi-final draw.

Four-time winners United beat Stoke City 2-0 in the quarter-finals on Wednesday and will play Sunderland, who shocked Chelsea 2-1 on Tuesday.

City, meanwhile, were drawn against West Ham United, who shocked Tottenham 2-1 on Wednesday.

After a first-half hailstorm briefly forced the teams off the pitch at Stoke’s Britannia Stadium, United prevailed through fine strikes from Ashley Young and Patrice Evra.

“The first goal tonight, whoever got it was going to make a big difference,” said United manager David Moyes.
