Cristiano Ronaldo moved in front of Lionel Messi as the top goalscorer in Champions League history with a hat-trick as Real Madrid opened their European campaign with a 4-0 win over 10-man Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.
Ronaldo scored twice from the penalty spot before heading home to make it eight goals in two games in four days and take his tally in the competition to 80, three ahead of his Barcelona rival.
“I am very happy. I thank my teammates for the confidence they have given me,” said Ronaldo.

“We knew that the pre-season was less important, that we needed to start well in La Liga and the Champions League.

“We started a little badly in La Liga with a draw, but since then we have been good, more consistent and we’re on a good run.”
Karim Benzema had opened the scoring thanks to a massive error from goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov in the first-half before Taras Stepanenko was sent-off for a second bookable offence just five minutes into the second period.

However, the victory was soured by an injury to Gareth Bale as the Welshman limped off suffering from a calf muscle problem after just half an hour.
“Bale had a spasm in his calf muscle,” said Madrid boss Rafael Benitez.
“We must wait a day or two to see how serious it is. He had a similar issue last year.”

Shakhtar boss Mircea Lucescu, meanwhile, was outraged at the decisions of referee Ivan Bebek.
“During the first 30 minutes we had quite good control, we created some opportunities. The mistake (for the first goal) proved very dear for us,” he said.
“In the second-half we had a player sent-off in Stepanenko. I want them to respect us, but unfortunately during these matches against the great teams of Europe almost the same thing has happened.”

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc admitted bigger tests await his side after they began their campaign with a 2-0 win against Malmo.
Angel Di Maria and Edinson Cavani got the goals as PSG, quarter-finalists in each of the last three seasons, saw off the Swedish champions at the Parc des Princes in Group A.
“It’s easy to compare after the first match. We will see at the end of the group stage. The two home teams have won, but our next matches will be away from home,” said Blanc, whose side visit Ukraine next while Madrid go to Malmo.
“We need to make sure we get points away from home, although not every team playing at home managed to win tonight.”

Meanwhile, Blanc warned that Di Maria is still some way short of his best form after handing the Argentine just his second start since signing from Manchester United last month.
“Angel is still building himself up. He arrived late after the Copa America and he was carrying a hamstring injury. I think we were right to let him rest at first rather than rush him in,” said Blanc of the winger brought in to help take Paris to the next level in Europe.
“He needs games because, let’s not forget, it was just his second start.
“He is clever in front of goal. He can bring us quality with his passing but I also think he can score a certain number of goals over the course of a season.
“We were very good down the right with Gregory (van der Wiel) and Marco (Verratti) and Angel. It augurs well.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who returned after injury to face his hometown team and the club with whom he started his career but missed a handful of chances in the first period and was eventually substituted 15 minutes from the end.
French forward Antoine Griezmann scored twice within seven first-half minutes to give Atletico Madrid a 3-0 win at Galatasaray.

Sevilla made it three out of three for La Liga as they cruised past Borussia Moenchengladbach – who have lost all four Bundesliga matches this season – 3-0 with goals from Kevin Gameiro and Ever Banega, both from the spot, and Yevhen Konoplyanka.
Benfica beat Champions League debutants Astana of Kazakhstan 2-0 in Lisbon with goals from Nicolas Gaitan and Kostas Mitroglou.
Julian Draxler went some way to helping Wolfsburg forget the departed Kevin de Bruyne by scoring his first goal for the Wolves in only his second appearance as the Germans beat CSKA Moscow 1-0.
