Nani gave Portugal the lead on the half-hour mark, firing in Andre Gomes’ cross from the right.

It had been coming for a while, and at that point you thought Portugal would cruise to victory.

Evidently they did too as they took their foot off the gas, and Birkir Bjarnason scored Iceland’s first ever goal at a major tournament five minutes into the second half.

Portugal were rattled, and although it was backs to the wall for Iceland for the rest of the match, Ronaldo and co. never got a clear sight of goal.

Ronaldo equalled his country’s all-time appearances record, but it’s doubtful this one will feature in any future self-aggrandising documentaries he makes.

Magical Magyars

Hungary were written off by many as the weakest team in the competition, while Austria were tipped as dark horses, but you wouldn’t have known it as the Magyars won 2-0.

Adam Szalai scored his first goal in 12 appearances in the 62nd minute and Austria were soon reduced to 10 men to further boost Hungary’s hopes.

Zoltan Stieber sealed it with three minutes to go, running onto a long pass from his own half and chipping Austria’s keeper Robert Almer with a delightful dink to send the travelling fans wild.

In a tournament not short of fine goals already, it was another for the highlight package, and gives Hungary an excellent chance of reaching the knockout stage - especially after Portugal’s draw with Iceland.

It was their first win at a Euros since 1964, and their first appearance at a major tournament since the 1986 World Cup.

Austria hit the post in the second minute through David Alaba, but otherwise the closest they came was a shot from the edge of the box by Zlatko Junuzovic, saved by Gabor Kiraly - who at 40 became the oldest player ever at the Euros.
