Carlos Tevez considers early China exit one year into Shanghai Shenhua contract

Argentine striker heads on holiday to Buenos Aires next week with his boyhood club Boca Juniors reportedly keen to bring him home permanently

Carlos Tevez has hinted he could bring an early end to his time at Shanghai Shenhua and return to his boyhood club in Argentina.

The striker left Boca Juniors last December to sign a two-year contract with the Chinese Super League team that reportedly made him the highest-paid player in the world on wages of £615,000 (HK$6.2 million) a week.

He has the option of activating a release clause in his contract after one year, but suggested he could stay in China.

“I don’t regret anything, not even leaving Boca because it was the time to do so.” Tevez told Argentina’s Radio Mitre.

“I wasn’t enjoying myself that much and I wanted to think about my family. I’m content and happy here [in China]. I get to enjoy my family and live peacefully.”

The 33-year-old is heading to Buenos Aires on holiday later this month and is reported to be meeting Boca president Daniel Angelici.

“I still haven’t made a decision on whether to return, although each time it becomes more difficult,” he added.

“I will see what I do. I will go on holiday but I will not be staying. I have to return [to China].”

Tevez’s spell at Shenhua has been a disappointment, scoring just two goals in 11 starts during an injury-hit campaign.

The club’s 3-0 defeat in midweek to Guizhou Zhicheng left them 12 points off third-placed Tianjin Quanjian in the table, with coach Gus Poyet under pressure to be replaced.

“I have a calf problem after a knock that I received on a scar that I had back when I was playing at West Ham [in the English Premier League] and it prevents me from training,” Tevez said.

“I go from injury to injury and the team is in the middle of the standings and I cannot give my all.”

Tevez also enjoyed trophy-laden spells with Manchester United and Manchester City in the Premier League, as well as Juventus in Italy’s Seria A, before returning to Boca in 2015.

“I miss Boca,” he said. “I miss the fans, wearing the jersey every Sunday and stepping on to La Bombonera.

“I would return for the Boca fans, for the people. These are things that I think of when considering whether to return.”
