Shanghai Shenhua still expect Carlos Tevez to return despite meeting with Boca Juniors president

Argentinian striker has been handed an extended break from the Chinese Super League club to undergo treatment

Shanghai Shenhua played down Carlos Tevez’s meeting with the president of Boca Juniors earlier this week during the wantaway striker’s break in Argentina.

Tevez was handed an extended holiday by Shenhua to return to his homeland to undergo treatment on an injury, although it only intensified rumours the former Manchester United and Manchester City striker will end his troubled spell in China.

The 33-year-old has signed an agreement to return to China on August 30 having failed to live up to his reported US$800,000-a-week salary with the Chinese Super League side, having joined from Boca ahead of the 2017 season.

“Tevez had lunch with the president of Boca? We know nothing about that,” said Shenhua.

“He is now on holiday, he has the right to meet anyone he wants to, this is his freedom.

Carlos Tevez has scored just two goals in 11 domestic appearances for Shanghai Shenhua this season.

“We won’t comment on something like that, let alone interfere with it. but we want to stress again that he will report to the club on August 30.”

During the 2010-11 season, Tevez returned to Argentina for three months following a disagreement with then-Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini and was fined and also lost out on his wages.

Reports in China also suggested Boca are seeking to take Shenhua to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over an unpaid instalment of US$3 million of Tevez’s transfer fee.

Tevez has scored just two goals in 11 domestic appearances for Shenhua this season and missed their last two domestic outings, with various injuries restricting his availability to coach Gus Poyet.

Shenhua find themselves 11th in the Super League table without a win in three games and nine points above the relegation zone.
