Liverpool squad has depth for different competitions, says Juergen Klopp ahead of League Cup bow
Reds boss insists he’s pleased with his squad ahead of Leicester City cup tie
Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp believes his side have the depth in the squad to compete in different competitions but did not rule out signing reinforcements in January.
Having missed out on Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, Klopp brought in Mohammad Salah, Dominic Solanke, Andrew Robertson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the close season.
“From today’s perspective, yes – we will see how it is in January,” he told the club’s website.
“I think the squad is wide enough to play in different competitions and to come as far as possible and that’s the plan at the moment.”
The club’s defensive frailties were also exposed in the 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the Champions League last week but Klopp said there was no need to panic.
Klopp said Oxlade-Chamberlain’s switch to Merseyside from Arsenal made “complete sense” and that the England international had been roped in as a long-term prospect.
“A new start is ... kind of a relief. You are in a situation in your old club ... and you accept it at some point and then it’s difficult to make the next step,” Klopp said.
“I thought it made complete sense for Alex to change club, especially to come here. So far, I can see that he has settled in perfectly.”
