Guangzhou stumble again in AFC Champions League
Big-spending Chinese club still two points behind Cerezo Osaka after a goalless draw in Japan
Chinese powerhouse Guangzhou Evergrande were held to a 0-0 draw in Japan by Cerezo Osaka on Wednesday and are still without a win after two games in group G of the AFC Champions League.
The big-spending Chinese Super League team won the continental title in 2013 and 2015 but under new coach Fabio Cannavaro are two points behind the Japanese team.
Guangzhou take on Jeju United of South Korea in the next round of games in early March.
In group H action, two goals from Mu Kanazaki put the eight-time Japanese champions, Kashima Antlers, in control at the home of the South Korean team after Dejan Damjanovic missed a first-half penalty for Suwon in a 2-1 victory.
Cristovam da Silva pulled a goal back for Suwon with one minute remaining but Kashima took the three points.
Only the top two teams from each of the eight groups of four progress to the knockout stage.
Sydney rallied from that setback to draw 2-2 at Shanghai Shenhua in an entertaining clash that either team could have won.
Obafemi Martins opened the scoring for the Chinese hosts after 26 minutes only for Luke Wilkshire to level for Sydney shortly after.
The Australian champions then took the lead ten minutes before the break through Alex Brosque but five minutes later, Fredy Guarin volleyed home from the edge of the area to make it 2-2.
Kashima are on top with four points, one more than Suwon. Sydney are in last place with one point, one behind Shanghai in third.
