Liverpool’s Hong Kong apprentice: Tim Bredbury talks about cleaning the boots and bath of one of the best teams ever

Hong Kong-born Tim Bredbury is one of the city’s most famous footballers, having spent three years with Liverpool – including one year on professional terms – during the ’80s.
It was the team of Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Alan Kennedy, Alan Hansen, Sammy Lee and Ian Rush among others. Bredbury’s audacity at the time is equivalent to that of a Hong Kong teenager trying to get into the current Manchester City squad under Pep Guardiola. But the fact is that Bredbury served two years as an apprentice and one year as a pro before deciding that he wanted to return to Hong Kong even though he could have made it at any other team in England.
In part 1 of his interview with the Official Liverpool Supporters Club Hong Kong Region & Macau, former Seiko and South China striker Bredbury talks about his years with Liverpool that started off with shining shoes for the first team, surviving on £20 (HK$210) a week and his efforts to supplant Liverpool’s most famous super-sub, David Fairclough, in the first team.
