Stan Wawrinka has advanced to the US Open quarter-finals after defending champion Novak Djokovic retired in the third set of their match Sunday night. 
The 23rd-seeded Wawrinka was leading two sets to none when Djokovic had to stop because of a left shoulder injury, which he had been dealing with throughout the tournament.  
The two were facing each other for the first time since they met in the 2016 US Open final.
After Wawrinka won the first two sets 6-4, 7-5 and was up 2-1 in the third, fans at the US Tennis Center expressed their displeasure when Djokovic informed the umpire he was unable to continue the match.

“It’s never the way you want to finish a match,” Wawrinka said in his post-match interview with ESPN. “I’m really sorry for Novak. He’s a good friend, he’s an amazing champion. We’ve played some amazing battles my whole career, so I feel sorry for him. But I was playing some very good tennis. I’m happy to be back.
“It’s been really tough since my surgery. It took me two years to get back at this level. It’s amazing to be back this year and at that level.”

Wawrinka, of Switzerland, has won three grand slam singles titles, beating the No 1 player in the world at the time in all three finals. He won the 2014 Australian Open (beating Rafael Nadal in four sets), the 2015 French Open (beating Djokovic in four sets) and the 2016 US Open (Djokovic in four sets).


He reached a career high No 3 in the world following his Australian Open title in 2014. However, in August 2017, Wawrinka announced that he would undergo surgery to repair damage to his knee, and that he would miss the remainder of the 2017 tennis season.
Djokovic has held the No 1 ranking for 266 (non-consecutive) weeks – fifth-most in ATP history. 
His 16 grand slam singles titles rank third in men’s tennis history behind Roger Federer with 20 and Rafael Nadal with 18.
