World No 1 tennis star Novak Djokovic has apologised on social media following his dismissal from the US Open for hitting a line judge with a ball.

“This whole situation has left me really sad and empty,” the top seed at Flushing Meadows wrote on Instagram on Sunday night, several hours after the event.

Serbian superstar Djokovic had hit the line judge with a ball during his fourth round match against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta after the Spaniard broke his serve.

The incident led to Djokovic defaulting the match, with Carreno Busta leading 6-5 in the first set.

“I checked on the lines person and the tournament told me that thank God she is feeling ok.
