China’s Wang Xiyu battles through for French Open debut

China’s Wang Xiyu will make her French Open debut this week after beating Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the final round of qualifying on Friday.

The 20-year-old world No 145 came through two sets to one – 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 – in an epic two hour and 21 minute clash against the world No 113.

Wang was the only Chinese player to come through qualifying in either the men’s or women’s draws and she will join four of her compatriots in the women’s singles.

China’s No 1 Wang Qiang faces Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei, Zhu Lin plays Jessica Pegula, Zhang Shuai meets Varvara Lepchenko and Zheng Saisai will play Sara Sorribes Tormo.

The 2018 US Open junior winner will play Danielle Collins in the first round in Paris. The 27-year-old is returning to the court weeks after surgery for endometriosis.
