China’s Zhang Shuai has not rested on her laurels after winning the women’s doubles at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati at the weekend, moving on to the doubles quarter-finals at the Cleveland Open. Zhang and partner Lucie Hradecka beat Sabrina Santamaria of the US and Miya Kato of Japan in three sets at the Tennis In The Land tournament on Tuesday. The Chinese-Czech pair had to dig deep, coming back from a 6-2 first set loss to take the second set 6-2 before dominating the third set shoot-out 10-5. That was the second win of the day for Zhang, who also triumphed in her women’s singles match against Italy’s Martina Trevisan. That will be followed by the doubles quarter-final against India’s Sania Mirza and Christina McHale of the US. Zhang and Stosur seal doubles crown in Cincinnati Zhang is looking for a 10th doubles title after her victory with Samantha Stosur in Cincinnati at the weekend. That was the pair’s first title since the Australian Open in 2019. That win saw Zhang jump 19 places in the WTA doubles ranking to No 27, where she is China’s No 2 after world No 22 Xu Yifan. In the singles rankings Zhang is now one place behind China’s No 1 Wang Qiang at No 49. Zhang can overtake both with a good showing at the US Open , which begins next Monday.
