British teenager Emma Raducanu’s remarkable run at the US Open has reached the quarter-finals after she routed Shelby Rogers of the US in their round-of-16 match.

Rogers, the world No 43, started off the stronger and raced into a 2-0 lead and was up 40-15 in the third game before the 18-year-old found her feet. She never looked back as she brushed past Rogers in one hour and five minutes.

“Shelby is a great opponent, she has done so well in the US Open,” the Briton said after her 6-2, 6-1 victory. “I’m so happy to have come through and overcome some of the nerves at the beginning.”

The American was the third top 50 player that Raducanu has beaten in her seven matches so far at the US Open, after accounting for China’s world No 49 Zhang Shuai and the world No 41 Sara Sorribes Tormo in the previous round.

Raducanu made her breakthrough as a wild card at Wimbledon this summer, where she reached the fourth round before retiring hurt in her match against Ajla Tomljanovic.
