World number one Novak Djokovic got a revenge of sorts when he rallied to beat Daniil Medvedev, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in Paris for a record 37th Masters title on Sunday.
Djokovic, 34, failed to serve out the match in the eighth game of the final set but did better in the following one to triumph in two hours and 15 minutes.
He recovered from losing the first set against the Russian title holder but needed to save three break points before levelling the sets en route to his sixth Paris title and 86th overall.
Djokovic’s 37th title in the prestigious Masters series, the biggest events outside the grand slams, moved him one ahead of Spain’s Rafael Nadal.
Reaching the Paris final also meant that Djokovic clinched the year-ending number one ranking a record seventh time, one more than former American great Pete Sampras.
But second-ranked Medvedev had two months ago denied him a rare calendar year grand slam when he beat him for the US title. Paris was Djokovic's first tournament since the painful New York defeat.
