Despite some early nerves, Hong Kong tennis prospect Coleman Wong Chak-lam stormed into the second round of the Australian Open Junior Championships on Sunday with a decisive win over hometown wild card Amor Jasika. Wong needed just 56 minutes to get the job done, taking the win in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. The 17-year-old served up some stunning moments, with a total of eight aces during his game and recording the fastest serve at 204km/h. The reigning US Open boys’ doubles champion is seeded 12th for the Melbourne Park event, part of the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors, and will now face Turkey’s Togan Tokac in round two. “I’m very happy with my performance today,” Wong told SCMP after his win. “I was nervous before the match, but it was a very good match for me to prepare for the rest of the tournament. I’m feeling confident, I will just keep my mind on the game and keep going.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar (@rafanadalacademy) It’s been a busy few weeks for Wong, who competed at the J1 Traralgon 2022 Tennis Tournament last week where he progressed through to the semi-finals, but was defeated by Croatian Mili Poljicak. In addition to the men’s singles tournament, he will play alongside Brazil-born American Bruno Kuzuhara in Monday’s junior doubles event, where they are seeded second. He has been training at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy in Mallorca since November last year, soaking up as much knowledge as he could. At this week’s Australian Open Wong said they met and had a moment to speak. I will definitely watch him next round or anytime he plays.” Last year, Wong made history when he became the first player from Hong Kong to win a boys’ doubles grand slam title at the US Open, alongside playing partner Max Westphal. A five-time ITF junior circuit singles winner, Wong ended his 2020 season ranked 50 in the ITF’s junior singles standings.
