Recent case allegedly saw one Uber user find 30 false transactions worth nearly US$1,000

It looks like Uber has landed itself in hot water – yet again.

Several Uber users in Singapore have reported being charged for “phantom rides” that they never took – and many of these rides allegedly took places in cities halfway around the world.

Of course, no expense was spared.

For Ms Jenna Lim, this meant waking up to a negative balance in her bank account. After checking through her bank statement, she realised that there had been some 30 fraudulent transactions from Uber amounting to more than S$1,300 (US$958).

Talk about waking up to a nightmare in real-life.

Other victims also took to Facebook to share their encounters.

This is not the first time that Uber riders have complained about being charged for “phantom rides”.

In a Facebook post, Mr Aswin Arshad said that the same thing happened to him three months ago.

Earlier last year, Londoners also reported being charged for expensive rides in countries like Mexico and New York.

But it’s not all bad news.

A spokesperson from Uber said that the company will work with those affected to “refund the charges“, reported Channel News Asia.

She added: “we would like to assure the public that payment information is encrypted when you enter it into the Uber app”.

If you’re a Uber user, you might want to give your bank statements a quick check – just to be safe.
