Xiaomi seems to be winning big in Europe. A recent report from Canalys shows the Chinese smartphone maker shipped 73% more phones this quarter than the same period last year. It's now the fourth most popular smartphone brand on the continent
Back in China, though, shipments of Xiaomi phones are plunging . Huawei has recently dominated the domestic market, boosted by rising nationalist sentiment resulting from the US-China trade war. This might be why Xiaomi is doubling down on Europe, where it had its first smartphone launch in Berlin last month.
Huawei is now having a harder time in Europe, where it suffered a “catastrophic” drop in smartphone shipments in the second quarter, according to Canalys analyst Mo Jia. When the company was blacklisted by the US in May, it was forced to drop Google apps and services, leading the company to delay sales of its Mate 30. Despite this, Huawei maintained its position as the second largest smartphone brand in Europe, with sales increasing in the third quarter. Samsung is still Europe’s favorite brand, covering almost a third of the market.
