JD.com CEO Xu Lei steps down as e-commerce giant appoints former CFO Xu Ran as new leader
- The reshuffle of JD’s senior leadership comes after Richard Liu reasserted control at his e-commerce empire late last year
- Xu Lei held various senior roles during the decade-plus he spent at JD.com, including CEO of JD Retail, and as chief marketing officer

E-commerce giant JD.com said its chief executive officer Xu Lei, who was handed the role by founder Richard Liu Qiangdong about a year ago, has retired from the company for “personal reasons”.
JD has named Xu Ran, the company’s chief financial officer, as its new CEO, reporting directly to Liu, according to a statement published by JD on Thursday. Shan Su, the current chief financial officer of JD Logistics, will take over Xu Ran’s responsibilities as CFO for JD overall.
The reshuffle of JD’s senior leadership comes after Richard Liu reasserted control at his online e-commerce empire in December 2022, after reprimanding executives for poor performance and strategic mistakes amid slowing growth in China’s e-commerce sector.
“JD respects and has approved Xu Lei’s request for retirement,” JD said in the statement, adding that Xu Lei will join the firm’s advisory board as its first chairman, taking part in project management and strategic planning.
Xu Lei held various senior roles during the decade-plus he spent at JD.com, including CEO of JD Retail, chief marketing officer of the company, head of JD Wireless and head of the marketing department. As president of the company, he was in charge of operations and collaborative development of the various business units.
