Alibaba Cloud, the digital technology and cloud services unit of Alibaba Group Holding, said it is launching a credit course with the business school of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) to nurture local talent, in a sign of the company’s deepening ties with the city.

The course, titled “Cloud Computing: Essential and Application in Entrepreneurship”, will enable students “to experience real-life scenarios involving cloud technology”. The partnership underscores Alibaba Cloud’s commitment to empowering digital talent development in Hong Kong, according to the company’s press release on Tuesday.

The deal comes as Alibaba Cloud is striking out on its own, after parent Alibaba, which owns the South China Morning Post, announced last month a sweeping reorganisation that would see its sprawling business divided into six independently-run units.

Alibaba Cloud, which is managed by Alibaba CEO and chairman Daniel Zhang Yong, is being widely watched for its growth potential. Zhang took direct control of the unit after Alibaba Cloud’s services suffered a major outage in Hong Kong and Macau in December.
Zhang spoke on stage at Alibaba’s annual Cloud Summit last week, when he announced that the company would integrate its ChatGPT competitor Tongyi Qianwen into all products.

Alibaba Cloud said it is the first enterprise partner of HKU Business School to take part in the design and teaching of a credit course. Under the collaboration, participating students will receive a range of benefits, such as free registration for the qualifying exam to become an “Alibaba Cloud Certified Associate”.

Other perks include access to more than 300 cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence online courses under the Alibaba Cloud Academic Empowerment Programme, and first-hand experiences on how cloud computing works.
