China has voiced support for local electronics parts supplier Wingtech as it battles authorities in the Netherlands over control of its European semiconductor unit.

The state-backed China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA) said in a statement on Tuesday that it “firmly supports” CSIA member Wingtech in defending its rights, a day after the Chinese company said its European subsidiary Nexperia, which it acquired in 2019, was under temporary external management following an order from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs on national security grounds.

“We oppose the abuse of the concept of ‘national security’ to impose selective and discriminatory restrictions on overseas branches of Chinese companies,” said the association.

The statement came after state media Global Times published an opinion piece that called the Dutch move “extremely egregious, going far beyond normal commercial regulation and carrying blatant political coercion and discriminatory overtones”.

The Nexperia case exemplified the trend of “predatory intervention” by the US and Netherlands governments to resort to “commercial plunder” against Chinese firms “under the guise of national security”, it added.

Lin Jian, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, said on Monday that the country opposed “overstretching the concept of national security”, and added that China was “firmly resolved in defending its own legitimate and lawful rights and interests”, without elaborating.
