Meet three Hongkongers taking on the Topfit Morning challenge

One aims to lose 14kg, the other to build strength, and another to escape her sedentary lifestyle

Elizabeth Wu has not exercised since high school and hopes the challenge will help her turn fitness into a habit. Photos: Alex Maeland

Elizabeth Wu

Age: 28

But I feel… like a college kid in an old lady’s body.

Origin: Chinese-Korean

Occupation: Account manager and digital consultant at PR company Buzz Agency

Why are you taking part in #TopfitMorning? This is the kick I’ve needed to get back into shape. Entering the dark side of the 20s, I’ve realised it’s about time to take better care of my body and health.

My goal at the end of the 12 weeks: I want to turn fitness into a habit and fit it into my demanding schedule without it feeling like a chore.

Fitness inspiration: Jennifer Lopez - she’s in her mid-40s and looks better than ever.

Athletic background: None, sad to say I haven’t had a regular fitness regime since PE in high school.

Strengths: Dedication - when I set my mind to something I go all in. If I’m going to do it anyway I might as well give it my best shot.

Weaknesses: Food (read: carbs) and midnight snacking. Also, a happy hour is always hard to resist, especially working in Central (HK$5 drinks at Lily & Bloom is my ultimate downfall).

Lee Tsui hopes to lose 14kg and return to the shape he was when he was a model.

Lee Tsui

Age: 33

But I feel… 18 mentally, 50 physically.

Origin: Hong Kong Chinese and English (born and raised mainly in Leicester, England).

Occupation: Product designer and general business developer, and currently “former model” due to current size and lack of time due to excessive work/stress.

Why are you taking part in #TopfitMorning? Really need the motivation to shed the weight I’ve gained over the past couple of years whilst I’ve been wrapped up in my company’s growth, and I think to commit to an intense structured plan will push me back into a healthy and fit lifestyle.

My goal at the end of the 12 weeks: Lose 14kg and keep it off.

Fitness inspiration: Most of my model friends who still work, and everyone else I slide by on Instagram who body shames me.

Athletic background: Former kickboxer and gym junkie, currently a snack junkie.

Strengths: Physical strength, flexibility.

Weaknesses: Eating in general and a dislike of intense running and generally strenuous cardio.

Janice Lee is a seasoned triathlete but while her cardio is good, her body lacks strength. She’ll be working on that in this challenge.

Janice Lee

Age: 33

But I feel… 33. I’d like to feel 28 though!

Origin: Hong Kong

Occupation: Lawyer

Why are you taking part in #TopfitMorning? To focus on parts of my body that are not getting worked out and to achieve better performance in triathlon through strengthening my core and other muscles.

My goal at the end of the 12 weeks: To be able to maintain a routine which fits in with my daily schedule without feeling burdensome. And to fit into these shorts I haven’t been able to fit into for three years.

Fitness inspiration: Kacy Catanzaro, the former gymnast who became the first woman ever to successfully complete the finals course on the show American Ninja Warrior.

Athletic background: Started off as a runner around 2007, became a triathlete in 2010.

Strengths: Cardio, endurance.

Weaknesses: Core, body strength.
